East Riding - Changes to the blue bin

Please do not put glass, additional plastics and Tetra Pak in your blue bin until you receive the council's letter informing you of the start of the scheme in your area.

The council has started a new kerbside collection of glass, a wider range of plastics and Tetra Pak cartons in the blue bins.

In a phased roll out, the council will deliver the new service to up to 150,000 households across the East Riding.

The dates for the roll out are:

  • Completed- 27 June to 22 July - Holderness, including Hedon, Withernsea and surrounding villages;

  • Completed- 25 July to 19 August - Bridlington, Hornsea, Flamborough and surrounding villages;

  • Completed- 5 September to 16 September - Driffield, Cranswick, Middleton, Beeford, Brandesburton, Long Riston, Kilham, Nafferton and surrounding villages;

  • Completed- 22 August to 14 October - Willerby, Anlaby, Cottingham, Hessle, Swanland, Kirk Ella, Brough, South Cave and all surrounding villages;

  • 17 October to 11 November - Beverley and surrounding villages;

  • 14 November to 9 December - Market Weighton, Pocklington, Stamford Bridge and all surrounding villages;

  • 12 December to 13 January - Goole, Howden, Snaith, Gilberdyke and all surrounding villages.

From the day residents receive the council's letter, they may put glass bottles and jars (with lids), plastic food containers, including yoghurt pots; margarine tubs; food trays and Tetra Pak cartons in the blue bin, along with paper, cans and plastic bottles.

The council will also be exchanging smaller blue bins for larger, 240 litre bins to help residents recycle as much as possible. The exchange will take place on the next collection day after receipt of the letter.

It is important that blue bins are at the kerbside by 7am on that particular collection day because the council will be emptying and exchanging the bins earlier than normal.

Those residents who prefer to keep the smaller bin should put the tag, which will be enclosed with the letter, on the blue bin on that next collection day.

Your questions answered:

How do I know if I have the smaller blue bin?
If the blue bin is the same size as the brown bin, it is the larger 240 litre bin and will not be exchanged.

What if I want to keep my smaller blue bin?
If you wish to keep this bin, attach the tag that will be enclosed with the letter to the handle of the bin before your next collection day. Any small blue bin that does not have a tag attached will be exchanged.

Can I phone up to request a larger blue bin before the day of the exchange?
No, we will only be exchanging bins on the next collection day after you receive the letter.

What if I decide after that collection day that I want to swap?
We will not be exchanging bins on request until after the roll out is complete, which could be up to six months, so we recommend you take up the offer of exchange.

If I’m away at the time of the exchange for my area, can I still exchange my bin?
We will be able to only exchange your bin for a larger blue bin at the end of the roll out.

I have two small bins, will I still get a larger bin?
We will exchange one of the small bins for a larger bin, so leave the tag on only one of the smaller bins.

Why are you sending another calendar?
Residents may have stuck their calendar inside the blue bin lid as recommended. So when the bin is exchanged, the calendar may need replacing.

Why are you exchanging the bins?
In order to provide more space in the blue bins for the additional materials we are planning to collect.

Can all types of plastic now be put in the blue bin?
If you have received the council’s letter, you will be able to put in the blue bin most mixed plastic containers, such as food trays, yoghurt pots, fruit punnets and margarine tubs. At that stage you can also start to put Tetra Pak cartons in the blue bin.
Please do not put hard plastic items, such as drainpipes, garden furniture and plastic toys, in your blue bin as they cannot be recycled at this time.

Can all types of glass be put in the blue bin when we are on the new service?
After receipt of the letter, residents may put all glass bottles and jars in the blue bin, including lids. Please do not put sheet glass or Pyrex in the blue bins.

When will my blue bin be collected?
Your collection day has not changed. Your blue bin will be collected every four weeks as per the enclosed calendar.

Can I put side waste out?
No, all materials need to be placed inside the blue bin for collection.

What are you going to do with the old blue bins?
They will be recycled into pellets and reused.
