The Bradford family of Beverley are the East Riding’s greenest residents.
They are the third annual winners of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s eco family award.
Sheila Bradford, her husband, Clive, and their Hull University student son, Andrew, topped the entries to win the title and £250 in vouchers to spend on ethical products, including household items, clothes and gifts.
Mrs Bradford, a school senior administrative officer, said: “I am amazed to have won. I didn’t think I did too well in the interview but I am absolutely thrilled.”
She added; “I have always been a keen recycler. I was brought up in an era when my grandparents were into mending, repairing and reusing things.
“I hate to see waste. I have a passion about it.”
The whole family goes the extra mile, including building a log pile for hedgehogs, a wormery for kitchen waste and three composters. They are also regulars to the household waste recycling site at Weel.
John Skidmore, head of streetscene services, said: “This time, we have received the largest number of entries since starting the competition. It wasn’t just the number of entries but the excellent quality.
“The Bradfords were clearly the winners because of the many ways they found to manage their household waste and care for their environment. “
