Why recycle?

Each time you recycle, you do three good things for the environment: you avoid putting rubbish into a landfill site; you help to conserve energy and important raw materials; and you make a positive contribution to tackling climate change.

Recycled materials can be used to make a wide variety of new products. The recycling industry as a whole, from collection through to the manufacture of products, is not only good for the environment, it is also good for the economy. The industry supports thousands of jobs and this is predicted to grow as recycling increases.

You can help to save the environment

A massive 60 per cent of our household waste could be recycled or composted, but most of it is still deposited in landfill sites. In 2005/2006 Hull and East Riding residents produced 331,315 tonnes of household waste

Recycling helps East Riding and Hull to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. The cost of landfilling waste is due to rise and so the more that can be recycled, the better. Landfill is not a sustainable means of waste disposal.
