Nappy facts

  • The average baby goes through about 4,500 nappies in the first two and a half years of their life

  • Eight million disposable nappies are discarded into landfill every day in the UK

  • A disposable nappy can take anywhere from 200 to 500 years to decompose

  • About four per cent of all landfill is made up from disposable nappies

  • It takes about one cup of crude oil to produce the plastic in each disposable nappy

  • It takes as much energy to produce one throwaway nappy as it does to wash a cloth nappy over 150 times.

The council does not have an incentive scheme for cloth nappies at this time because of the conflicting views about the environmental benefits.
