The register lists companies that repair goods like TVs, fridges, irons and other items such as clothing.

It also lists charities and organisations that will collect unwanted goods for distribution to the needy.

Freecycle

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is also suggesting residents might which to use, or even start, a local Freecycle group to keep items out of landfill

Freecycle groups are already operating in the area covering Bridlington to Driffield and has up to 500 members in the Hull area.

Freecycle is an internet-based network which links those with unwanted household items with others who can make use of them. Popular items include furniture, kitchen appliances, computers, TVs and children's toys.

The site is free to join and is run through Yahoo! Items on offer must be free and legal and have to be collected, so Freecycle is ideal for bulky furniture like sofas.
